West Ham United U23s have been very impressive this campaign, drawing three of their 16 Premier League 2 games and winning the rest.
To have a record like this shows the positive impact that Dmitri Halajko has had since he joined West Ham during the summer of 2019.
There are players such as Nathan Holland, Conor Coventry and Dan Kemp who have impressed enough to take the next step in their development, securing loan moves to Oxford United, Lincoln City and Stevenage respectively.
While a temporary exit can be seen as a positive for the club, with players taking the step up from youth football, having talented players leave permanently is surely a negative for them.
That was the case with Joe Powell in January, as the 21-year-old joined Burton Albion, having previously been a key man for the U23s.
He scored his first goal for the League One outfit in his second game, netting the opener in a 2-2 draw against AFC Wimbledon with a left-footed effort.
That departure has also been followed up by Kai Corbett joining Manchester United’s youth setup, with ExWHUemployee stating why he left, explaining: “He had a fall out with one of the coaches and it was felt by some he wasn’t good enough to make it.”
Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?
The 18-year-old scored against Newport County in the 5-4 EFL Trophy win, while his Man United debut goal, against Blackburn Rovers, saw his U18 Premier League tally go to four goals and one assist from 11 games.
The Athletic also added some context to the teenager’s pedigree at youth level: “Corbett has scored almost 150 goals in three seasons for West Ham at youth level and is recognised as one of the top players in their under-18 set-up.”
Then there is Anthony Scully’s permanent move to Lincoln City, which seems baffling from West Ham’s point of view.
In 16 appearances across Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy this season, he has managed a highly impressive 14 goals and five assists, while he was also named PL2 Player of the Month for September.
All of this even saw him get his first call up to the Republic of Ireland U21s squad, yet he was allowed to leave the Hammers without having had a single first-team opportunity or loan.
West Ham have now lost three promising prospects in a short period of time, if this type of trend continues over time then it’s pretty evident that they’re at risk of undoing the positive work Halajko has done so far.
Meanwhile, a West Ham academy graduate had a shocker in a game that had Jarrod Bowen on the mind.
