Liverpool’s sixth major European Cup victory is nearly two months old now, but the losing boss on the day in Mauricio Pochettino is still going on about it.
In fairness to the Argentine, he raises some good points and his words should not antagonise Liverpool supporters.
The former Southampton manager discussed his feelings after the 2-0 defeat in Madrid, revealing that the aftermath was his lowest point in football, but his comments about the spending of Spurs’ rivals should offer Liverpool hope for the coming season instead of cause bickering.
What did he say?
Pochettino said: “It’s in their history – in the last 10 years – all the money they were spending to arrive here. For us, we are far away from that. It’s not fair to compare and say Liverpool is going to be an inspiration for us. No! It’s the opposite.
“Tottenham is an inspiration for the rest of teams in the Premier League or in England because with less in everything you can fight.”
Should offer hope
Naturally, you’d expect responses from the Liverpool contingent to point out about their net spend, but Pochettino’s comments should be looked at more introspectively.
Some Liverpool fans are annoyed at the lack of signings this summer and one even wrote the season off on the basis of no new first-team arrivals, saying: “Guess we aren’t winning the league then.” But Pochettino has proved that nothing is won or lost in the transfer market.
His Spurs side didn’t make a single signing across the two windows prior to reaching the Champions League final last term, but still managed the impressive feat whilst recording a fourth-place finish in the league.
It just goes to show that keeping those already at the club together and working to improve them, rather than get the chequebook out at any opportunity, can reap the benefits – those amongst the Liverpool fanbase concerned about the upcoming season should see Spurs as an inspiration for all the reasons Pochettino outlines.
